Protocols are an inherent part of the communications equipment industry - without protocols, communication between different types of equipment would not be possible. The software implementing a protocol or multiple protocols is often referred to as a protocol stack.While each protocol may be different, there are some underlying issues that are common to their implementation.Developer implements the stack by using Programming language and development tools where as Test engineer test the protocols by using scipting language, and test tools.

By definition protocol stacks are message processing software components. Basic functionality of a protocol stack can be
 summerised here:

  •  A message in a predefined format enters a node
  •  the stack processes the message as per rules pre-defined by standard bodies
  •  The node updates it’s own state and
  •  Possibly generates and sends a new message as per pre-defined format.

  Protocol stacks have the following interfaces:

  • Programmable APIs, CLI, SNMP and configuration file for configuring the stack.
  • Physical interface on the host for capturing relevant network messages.
  • Platform/OS APIs for memory management, signals, Inter-process communication and other system facilities.
